Back in the days of the old wild west, the San Francisco mint was famous for, as well as an important source of silver coins. Way back in 1852, Congress authorized the construction of the San Francisco mint, and they officially opened in 1854. This new building earned the name of “Granite Lady”, mainly because it was constructed of granite. That nickname became even more true when a devastating earthquake struck the city in 1906, and the very next day the San Francisco mint was the only institution that opened for business as usual.
Today, the Morgan silver dollar with the famous “S” mint mark, is highly sought after by collectors because they are thought to be the most beautiful of all silver dollars, due primarily to the skilled artistry in the engraving of these special coins.
