The Carson City Mint in Nevada was opened in 1870 and ceased production in 1893. Of the many coins it minted, the Morgan silver dollars were the most popular. When a bank was robbed by Jesse James and his desperadoes, most of their booty was made up of Morgan dollars. Minted from 90% pure silver, they were the favorite form of money in the Wild West.
Over a century old, these historic coins are a cherished memento of an era, when the pioneers were making a stand in the West and the Comstock Lode silver was unearthed in the mountains near Carson City. The famous “CC” mint mark was the only double letter mint mark authorized for usage.
Only two percent of all Morgan dollars, in total, were minted at the short-lived, frontier Carson City Mint, making them highly in demand by numismatics all over the world.
